Operational benchmarking

Objectives

In order to improve the quality and efficiency of the service, provider Z undertook a series of benchmarking analysis against its London teaching hospital peer group and the national average.

Approach

Dr Foster’s analysis of SUS data allows the benchmarking of indicators across sites, with a range of indicators including:

  • Standardised mortality rates
  • Standardised risk of readmission
  • Day case rates
  • Follow-up to first outpatient ratio.

Examination of the data alone cannot give firm conclusions, but does identify areas which merit further investigation.

Business benefits

A trust’s aggregate performance may not reveal the time inefficiencies within the organisation. By analysing performance at specialty level and against a bespoke peer group, areas of concern can be highlighted and appropriate action followed through.
