One year after the publication of The Intelligent Practice, a recent survey carried out by Dr Foster Intelligence found that current primary care information provision is lacking in strategic vision.
Information provided by PCTs seems to be drawing mixed reviews. Asked to evaluate the overall quality, format and frequency, nearly half of respondents said that what they were receiving from their PCT was sufficient, although more than a quarter found the information insufficient.
However, when the questions addressed strategy and timeliness, respondents were far more dissatisfied. Fifty-six per cent of respondents said that the information lacked forward-planning and vision, fifty-three per cent said the information did not focus on significant risks, issues and exceptions and forty-seven per cent thought that the information was out-of-date.
When asked what area of information they would most like to improve over the next year, respondents chose, in order of importance:
Survey respondents included GPs, practice managers and PBC programme managers.
