Bill Moyes references The Intelligent Board in recent Chairs Conference address 11 March 2008

Examining the roles of boards in effective service delivery, Moyes said that he has found very little guidance available for trusts. One resource that stands out to him and that he finds 'very useful' in filling the gap is the Intelligent Board report.

In his presentation, he discusses the necessity of reviewing board agendas to ensure that they cover the appropriate amount of strategy. He found that many boards, Monitor's included, tended to spend much more time than was necessary on operational matters and too little time on strategy and external relations.

Boards need to make 'well-considered decisions' about their organisation's performance. Part of making those decisions involves having the most relevant information available and should include external performance benchmarks.

The Intelligent Board series of reports aims to provide trust board members with guidance on the information needed for each aspect of governance. The reports also supply example agendas and potential data sources, all seeking to help improve effectiveness and efficiency.
