'Healthier Warrington' debate a huge success 19 June 2008

The event was the first of its type to be hosted by Warrington Primary Care Trust (PCT) as part of the 'Healthier Warrington' debate. The special public forum, at Warrington Wolves Stadium on Saturday, 14 June, was attended by 106 members of the public.

Run by Dr Foster Intelligence's Research and Consultation team, the event was a significant achievement in reaching the goal of involved patients helping to manage and create their care.

Eileen Page, from Grapenhall, said, "It was a really valuable exercise – everyone has had a chance to get their views across. The fact there is this type of event means there is a voice for the people."

Everyone attending the debate gave their views on what they would like to see from NHS services in the town, including GP practices, out-of-hours clinics and the priorities they want the PCT to take into account when planning for the future.

PCT leaders promised they will listen to the views and take them into account when making decisions about Warrington’s health services.

The audience was addressed by Andrew Burgess, Chief Executive of the PCT and Dr Joanne McCormack, a local GP and Chair of the Clinical Leadership Team, before they were invited to discuss the most pressing priorities for health in the area. Rita Robertson, Warrington’s Director of Public Health, also spoke about the challenges facing the town with regards to health and life expectancy.

An open floor 'Question and Answer' session brought forward issues such as hospital matrons, cleanliness and appointment systems put to the officers of the PCT.

Mr Burgess said, "I'm delighted by the response we had. This is about us building on our engagement with the public and listening to the public to ensure our future plans reflect their needs and wants. Ultimately, we spend around £275 million of public money every year, which is around £1350 per person and it is vital that this money is spent in ways that benefit everyone's health in Warrington."

Maria Austin, Head of Communications at Warrington PCT, said, "This event is just the beginning of a long conversation we are having with the public over what they want to see. We want this type of event to be a regular part of working arrangements so that we can make sure that the public are involved in our planning and setting our future direction."

Padgate GP and Chair of the Clinical Leadership Team, Dr Joanne McCormack, said the event was indicative of a new found spirit of co-operation between the PCT, health professionals and the public.

"Public views count to the PCT and it is good for everyone to think about what services they want to see available in the future. A year ago, when the proposals we were presented with were rejected, I was worried the public would be ignored. I can today acknowledge that the PCT listened and changed their plans as a result.

"Now the public and patients have an opportunity to put forward what they want from health services in the future – and know that their views will be taken into account," she said.

Results from Saturday will be taken into account along with the responses of more than 9,000 questionnaires that have been completed by residents of the town.
