Dr Foster Intelligence asked more than 150 NHS trust chairs and chief executives if they had taken steps to improve the provision, presentation and use of information within their organisation. Their answers were a resounding yes.

Survey results showed that:

• More than 95 per cent of respondents are planning on developing integrated information systems
• More than 80 per cent have already taken steps to improve the provision, presentation and use of information within their organisations
• More than 57 per cent include the Intelligent Board reports in their NED induction programmes

As Sir William Wells highlighted in his Intelligent Board session at NHS Confederation, the direction of travel is to move 'beyond targets' to outcome metrics. The perfect information source will probably never exist, but that is no excuse for inaction.
