It is estimated that if every PCT reduced the number of unintentional injuries among people aged ten to 24 by just ten per cent, the total saving to the NHS would be £24million a year.
SMARTRISK is a registered charity working with Dr Foster Intelligence to develop a tool for PCTs and SHAs that assesses the risk of injuries to children and young people and identifies injury hotspots. The SMARTRISK Monitor tool enables SHAs and PCTs to target interventions that make a difference to the incidence of such injuries and the associated costs.
The SMARTRISK Monitor:

Version 1 of SMARTRISK Monitor has been made available to PCTs at no cost for three months. Subsequent versions will have additional features and functions, such as the ability to drill down to ward level. Version 2 will be available in May at a small cost to PCTs and SHAs. The funds generated from this charge will help SMARTRISK to increase its delivery of injury prevention programmes across the UK and to fund future developments of this tool.
SMARTRISK Monitor has been built using GeoWise's Instant Atlas application, a graphical presentation tool that makes regional and local patterns easy to see and explore. To view the tool, you will need to have the Adobe SVG Viewer plug-in installed on your computer. This is available free at adobe.com.
