Martin is the Client Director, Marketing Services and social marketing programme lead at Dr Foster Intelligence. At DFI he has led the delivery of market research and marketing programmes for clients across the NHS in England at local and national level. These projects include, among other things, tackling the causes of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Cheshire and Merseyside, challenging the attitudes and behaviours that lead to coronary heart disease, cancers and diabetes in inner London, and delivering above-the-line campaigns promoting smoking cessation services.
Martin has worked with PCTs across the whole country leading a team tasked with addressing some of the most intractable health challenges of the day, such as smoking, sexual health, alcohol dependency and obesity. He often speaks at national conferences focusing on social marketing and its development within the healthcare sector in Britain.
A nurse by background, Martin trained in north-east England and spent 20 years in the NHS. His last post in the local health service was as executive nurse for an acute hospital trust, after which he went to the Department of Health and two arms-length bodies working on national information policies including the National Service Frameworks for children, long-term conditions and renal services.
