At the October 2007 meeting of the Ethics Committee Margaret Edwards, Chief Executive of Yorkshire and the Humber NHS was the special guest speaker. Margaret's presentation focuses on whether the NHS can continue to deliver services that meet the public's expectations in the 21st century whilst being founded on 'socialist' principles nearly 60 years ago and can the promise of free healthcare to all continue to be delivered as our ideologies and demands continue to develop and our personal desires begin to battle with the ideology of 'the greater good'.
The presentation raises some valid questions that we all need to think about... questions that will have to be discussed and decided one way or another... sooner than you might think.
Margaret is a former Director General of Access at the Department of Health and an experienced NHS manager. At the Department of Health she sat on the national NHS Board and had national responsibility for policy and service delivery across primary and secondary health care.
